Single Origin Matcha Powder — 4 Cultivars, Chiran, Kagoshima | 30g
Funky Matcha's Chiran matcha is a single origin Japanese matcha from Chiran, Kagoshima, made from four tea cultivars grown in the same region. Saemidori, Yutakamidori, Asatsuyu and Fujimidori come together in a balanced cup with gentle sweetness, mild umami, fresh vegetal notes and a clean, smooth finish.
This batch is from the second harvest, which gives it a fresh, slightly more structured character. It works just as well whisked with water as it does in a hot or iced matcha latte.
A great first single origin matcha
If you're new to single origin matcha, this is a good place to start. Most matcha is blended from several regions. This one comes from a single growing area, so you taste what Chiran actually produces, without it being hard to like. It's smooth, not too bitter and not too grassy, and forgiving if your water is a little too hot or your whisking isn't perfect yet.
It's also flexible. Drink it straight on a slow morning, or pour it over milk and ice on a busy one. One tin covers both.
Four cultivars, one origin
Saemidori · Yutakamidori · Asatsuyu · Fujimidori
Each cultivar brings something different to the cup: sweetness, body, aroma, freshness or umami. Together they create a rounder, more balanced profile than any one of them on its own. Even with four cultivars, the matcha is still single origin, since every leaf is grown in Chiran, Kagoshima.
From Chiran, Kagoshima
Chiran sits in Kagoshima on Kyushu, Japan's southern main island, and is one of the region's most established tea-growing areas. Tea from Chiran is known for its vibrant colour, freshness and naturally smooth character.
Second harvest, shading and milling
The tea plants are shade-grown for about three weeks before harvest. Shading pushes the leaves to build up chlorophyll and amino acids, which is where the vivid green colour, gentle sweetness and natural umami come from.
After harvest the leaves are processed into tencha and then bead-milled into a fine, smooth powder with a consistent texture that whisks easily and keeps the tea's fresh character.
Taste profile
Fresh and refreshing with gentle sweetness, mild umami, a light vegetal character and a clean, smooth finish. Balanced and approachable, suited to both traditional preparation and everyday drinking.
How to prepare it
Traditional matcha: Sift about 2g (roughly one heaped chashaku scoop) into a bowl using a fine matcha strainer. Add 60-80ml of water at 70-80°C and whisk in a quick M or W motion with a bamboo chasen until smooth and frothy.
Hot or iced latte: Whisk 2g with a small splash of warm water until smooth, then pour over steamed milk, or over cold milk and ice. Dairy and plant-based milks both work well.
You can also use it in smoothies and recipes.

Frequently asked questions
Is this matcha single origin?
Yes. It's made from four cultivars, but all of the tea is grown in Chiran, Kagoshima, which makes it single origin.
Is this a good matcha for beginners?
Yes. Its smooth, balanced profile and low bitterness make it an easy introduction to single origin matcha, whether you drink it with water or in a latte.
Why does it contain four cultivars?
Combining Saemidori, Yutakamidori, Asatsuyu and Fujimidori brings together sweetness, aroma, body, freshness and umami from different tea plants, while keeping a single geographical origin.
What does second harvest mean?
Second harvest is tea picked during the second main picking period of the growing season. Compared with first harvest matcha, it tends to have a slightly more structured, refreshing flavour while still keeping smoothness, vivid colour and umami.
How long is the tea shaded?
About three weeks before harvest, which helps develop the colour, sweetness and umami associated with high-quality matcha.
How is it milled?
The tencha is bead-milled into a fine, smooth matcha powder.
Can I drink it with just water?
Yes. It's smooth enough for traditional whisked matcha with water, and works just as well in hot and iced lattes.
How much matcha is in the package?
Each tin contains 30g of single origin matcha powder from Chiran, Kagoshima, Japan.
